The Pearl Street Triangle is a small parking island, adjacent to the Manhattan bridge in the heart of DUMBO. Currently a mish-mosh of patch work asphalt, failed Belgian blocks, and public parking, the area has a great potential to be revitalized into an enchanting public space as DUMBO’s town center.  With a restored Belgian block roadbed, street furniture, artistic lighting, public art and street trees and plantings the Pearl Street Triangle would be transformed into a one-of-a-kind venue for special events, public markets, and community interaction.

The Manhattan Bridge is one of the most famous bridges in the world, its architecture and magnificence attracts many people into the neighborhood. This project will not only help create a better quality of life into the neighborhood but will pay tribute to the Bridges magnificence; an actual celebration of the architecture and a tribute to the neighborhoods name. The spaces underneath the bridge will not only be beneficial for the people of D.U.M.B.O. but to all of the people of Brooklyn creating better public spaces and a better access to the waterfront.

Historically speaking a towns square has played the most important role as for the public sphere is concerned. A towns square has always the center for social and political interaction.

This particular site in D.U.M.B.O has it all; from location to delimitation… the location of this public square is essential is key for the future development of this neighborhood.

Envision the Pearl Street Triangle as a European-stile public square. The public parking removed, the patchwork road bed completely taken up, brought up to grade, and refurbished with Belgian blocks laid on top of a bed of resurfaced concrete that will ensure that the stones do not fail or sink anytime in the near future.

Street furniture is added to create opportunities for visitors to sit and appreciate the imposing architecture of the Manhattan Bridge. The Triangle becomes a venue for special events, public markets, and community interaction. Perhaps a public sculpture or fountain is placed in the middle of the Plaza creating a signature landmark within the heart of the Historical District of D.U.M.B.O.
